"One should not be Adventurous"

This was what came from our chief minister, Mdm Shiela Dixit, after a working girl was killed in the capital late night without any reason. I am still not out of it and wondering what she was expecting people to react when she would have said so. Or is it that she forgot to think about the reaction before articulating it. So many questions come to my mind whenever I think about it. Most of the people will say that this is what every parent or relative will say in response to a mishap like this, knowing the kind of society we are living in today. I totally agree with this. But who is responsible for this? The migrants from other states? or the hugeness of the crowd? Or the over stressed life that most of us are leading? Or all of these combined? But then, are the prospective chief ministers of Delhi unaware of all this? Before going to contest in elections shouldn’t they get prepared to tackle such problems and then try to solve at least one or two? Is this kind of surrender to the situation acceptable?

I was wondering if I want to be the chief minister of Delhi state in future, how much risk do I need to take. How much adventurous will I have to be for doing this? Has our current chief minister completely avoided taking risks and being adventurous to be what she is today? How can she say this on personal as well as professional level? Theoretically, this is what a chief minister is responsible for, and not for issuing warning to stay at home else get prepared to be killed.

I am not suggesting that even 3 am must be ensured to be a good time to move out of our houses, but I really want to know in the current scene, what is the time window, when I should feel completely safe moving out of my house. At least, one hour or two hour in a day when I can believe is likely to be problem free?

You go out in the noon time, your golden chain will get snatched, go out in morning or evening, vehicles will be lashing through the roads that you may very well get killed, knowing the way traffic rules are implemented in capital. And of course going out in night is adventurous as already acknowledged by our chief minister. I really cannot imagine how in this situation, removing vegetable vendors from roadsides or removing rakshaw walas from road can help give Delhi an international look.

I sometimes wonder, suppose if after this regular and normal struggle, I manage to become a successful woman and somebody posed a question: who do I owe this success, then I will have to mention all the taxi drivers, auto drivers who had pity on me and did not rape me and to all the people who gave me an opportunity to be adventurous, and only lastly my family and friends. Because, whenever I drive, travel, lay faith in every person who I deal with, I am being adventurous. That’s because the main deterrent in doing any crime now is one’s own conscience. If you manage to suppress that, you can do most of the things you like and call it all “rage”. I was under impression, that “rage” is a term used when some one does something without thinking of its consequences, but seriously, what are the consequences if someone kills someone else on road, house or anywhere, are there any consequences at all? if yes, how long it may take to see these? Arushi’s murder case is a classic example. And then they ask, why is the female to male ratio sinking to all time lows? Who will like to own someone (a daughter) liable to cause a persistent fear?

Having said all this, I totally agree that efforts have been made in this direction. But in the end, the results are all what matter and believe me, the coming generation is going to be really demanding.
