IIT and MBA

Time is changing. The brand that had so much of weight seems to be heading to a different phase now. People from IITs don't always go on become great engineers, but they do become successful in various other kinds of ventures. This might be due to the opportunities, education and culture. But this topic is too huge to explore here.
Now when I look back, I realize that the courses at IIT were designed to lead us to a school in US
pursuing PhD. The entire focus was to develop our tilt towards research. So, for decades people used IITs as their first step/launchpad for US. They kept leaving for a better life and opportunity, while India was still waiting to open up its economy. Limited opportunities to grow and loads of ambition forced people to follow this trend. They went abroad and performed very well, spreading the name of IIT internationally. So Indian government who was responsible for the mind drain, was indeed, in a way, responsible for the building of the brand IIT too. JEE established itself as a very successful benchmark of quality. One more thing that we can say is that the science profs at IIT were doing a good job by setting a good JEE paper than that the engineering profs were doing of nurturing the engineers that India could benefit from. I hope that some day they shall rethink about their curriculum and try to align it with the needs of the hour or they might run into the risk of loosing the sheen the college has enjoyed for so many years now. And the need to do so has become urgent now.

Markets have opened up. Lot of companies, once sceptical of investing in India, are rushing to set up their operations in India. They want to sell to the huge Indian customer base. They already have a product ready and all they want is a office in India and a manager sitting here to sell it. Clearly, this is an opportunity for MBAs and the opportunity is huge. These companies still do most of their research back home (well don't come running after me this telling me that lot of them are outsourcing that too, just tell me what MSc guys are paid here? believe me that's still a long way to go).  So, engineers and science people still need to move out if they really want a chance to do something.
Thus, MBA market is picking up really fast. Indians are anyway natural at making the most of their resources, which is what is the whole job of a manager. No wonder ISB (in Mohali) and IIMA (in Hyderabad) are building new campuses in India.
