Takeaways: Is conviction really good?
Last month has been in constant fight for projects. I did not apply for two rounds considering advice from my seniors. But in third round, I found a fantastic ELP offered and I got very enthusiastic about doing it. So, I dumped everything I had heard about elps and decided to form a team for the project. I did a whole bunch of things to get people together, only person who has been through the system will understand what that means. Then we started to work on the expression of interest for the project. We put together some very nice structure for the process to which everyone handsomely contributes. Then the last day before the deadline we all meet again to finalize the thing. Unfortunately, having an awesome company giving an awesome project is too much to handle sometimes. So one of our team member comes with a solution to the problem defined in the project (so we are already at the report stage). He decides that his idea is eureka idea and so we must put it in eoi. We agree, ok let's put it somewhere. But then, the enthusiasm builds up. It is the idea of lifetime, it can get me the job, it is a star, why the hell it didn't happen on earth before etc. So, things continue on the exponential course. We almost scrap everything we had thought so far. Some oppose the injustice but who doesn't agree is utter fool.
So we go to the company with the new document, they ask to explain. We explain, of course not what he was asking but the idea again for 50 percent of time. 70 percent of the team thinks that we shouldn't do what we are doing but conviction rules. Anyway, we end up getting rejected as anticipated.
By the way, we are doing entrepreneurship course this term and one thing we have seen is that full conviction is not a good thing. Sometimes we might be dreaming about something, and when we wake up it might be too late. Remember, it was conviction which made Hitler do what he did.
But personally, it was not satisfying to know that I was not able to save us from the damage. In fact, we had majority of the team having the same doubt but why did we all not insist enough. Counter conviction with conviction about the pitfalls is one important takeaway for me. I am bad at shouting, but perhaps I will learn if situation really demands. We get a chance to learn something everyday in this school and I hope this to be one.
